eeks about the audition of "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens, which were confirmed last week by "Twilight" star, actress Ashley Greene. But E! is not reporting rumors when it comes to Dakota Fanning. E! reports that the producers of "Twilight" are in direct negotiations with Dakota Fanning to star in "New Moon."

A source told Marc Malkin of E! that: "There were no auditions. They just offered it to her outright, and now they're in negotiations. They've been going back and forth."

In casting for the part of Jane, a Volturi, Italy's most sinister group of vampires, producers for "Twilight" were looking for a petite blonde with a "Botticelli-like angel face." Malkin also reports that an online petition had suggested Dakota Fanning as "perfect" for the part.

And she just might be. She certainly has the acting resume to get the job. Dakota Fanning has been acting since the age of five, when she appeared in a Tide detergent commercial. She has had what can only be called a charmed career in her nearly ten years in front of the camera (Fanning turns fifteen on February 23), starring not only in blockbuster movies but alongside some industry giants like Tom Cruise ("War of the Worlds"), Denzel Washington ("Man on Fire"), and Kurt Russell ("Dreamer"). Her breakthrough came in the Oscar nominated "I Am Sam," (2001) where she starred opposite Sean Penn (nominated for Best Actor) and Michelle Pfeiffer.
